•CVS attenuated the HPA axis reactivity in response to an acute stressor.•CVS affected physiological and behavioral parameters in both sexes.•Blunted CORT levels were related to reduced POMC mRNA expression in females.•Females and males show differences on gene expression of key HPA axis regulators.
