•The severity of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is reduced in mice lacking mannose-binding lectin (MBL).•The effects of absent MBL on GVHD are complement-independent.•MBL is expressed on antigen-presenting cell surfaces.•Absence of MBL reduces activation of dendritic cells by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).•Blocking of MBL/LPS ligations can be tested to prevent GVHD.
