•People often experience involuntary memories (IAMs) and future thoughts (IFTs)•The retrieval of IAMs and IFTs is thought to depend on inhibitory control.•IAMs and IFTs were not more frequently observed among poorly inhibiting individuals.•There is little support for the inhibition dependency of IAMs and IFTs.•Cognitive load leads to poor cue-noticing resulting in low frequency of IAMs.
