•Visual attention of shared road users was assessed with eye tracker.•Speeds of cyclists and electric scooter riders were >16 km/h.•Riders directed >75% fixations at road and pedestrians, in visual search for hazard.•Pedestrians moved at >5 km/h and observed more surroundings and less the road ahead.•Electric scooters should be treated as bicycles and subjected to same restrictions.
