Numerical studies on the performance of the circular fibre reinforced plastics-concrete filled steel tubes stub column under axial compression

Numerical models using the ABAQUS software were established to investigate the performance of the circular fibre reinforced plastics confined concrete filled steel tube (FRP-CFST) stub column under axial compression. The feasibility of the numerical models was validated based on previous experimental results, and parametric analysis was then conducted to investigate different factors on the axial compression behaviour of circular FRP-CFST stub column. Additionally, failure mechanism of the column during loading was identified based on the analysis of stress development in each component. Finally, current calculation formulae for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of FRP-CFST stub columns were compared and assessed, and a new formula with good accuracy was proposed via the regression analysis of the results from numerical models.
