•We reconsider the targets of team deviance as team-relevant and team-irrelevant.•Using affective events theory, we argue team-relevant acts create negative work events.•Team-irrelevant acts do not damage team affect or performance even when frequent.•Subtle minor acts directed within the team cause the most harm, especially when frequent.•Negative affect mediates the impact of team-relevant deviance severity on team performance.
