•Phen controlled the promoting effect of Fe(acac)3 in NHPI catalyzed oxidation of cumene.•Molar excess of Phen over Fe(acac)3 inhibited decomposition of CHP.•Preventing decomposition of CHP, Phen contributed to the resistance of NHPI to degradation.•Reactive FeIII/FeII-Phen2or3 complexes are in situ formed from Fe(acac)3, NHPI and Phen.
