E-platooning: Optimizing platoon formation for long-haul transportation with electric commercial vehicles

•We consider platoon formation of electric trucks in long-haul transportation.•The e-platooning problem must integrate the charging of electric trucks.•A new solution framework called adaptive large matheuristic search is introduced.•Mixed fleets of conventional and electric trucks reduce the platooning gains.
