•It is feasible to match a database of registrants from Special Olympics Ontario with administrative health databases at ICES.•Health status of children and youth with IDD who participate in Special Olympics can be generalized if age is held constant. Children and youth with IDD who participate in Special Olympics use the health care system less than non-participants.
