•A person’s shopping orientation can influence the amount of variety they seek in product choices.•People who see shopping as a fun activity exhibit higher levels of variety seeking behavior compared to those who see shopping as a chore.•This effect holds true for products selected sequentially as well as in bundles.•Levels of product information seeking and deal-proneness mediate the effect.
