摘要

•Relative citation ratio (RCR) is a new field-normalized metric of a scholarly impact.•RCR 1.00 indicates an equal impact as an NIH-funded publication in the same field.•The 50th percentile RCR for all cardiothoracic surgery research articles is 0.84.•Women exhibit greater career median RCR but lower career maximum RCR than men.•This study presents the first assessment of RCR for cardiothoracic surgery research.
