•A composite structure that In2O3-x nanoparticles are embedded on the surface of carbon spheres was constructed.•The quantity of the oxygen defects on the In2O3-x nanoparticles can be controlled.•The oxygen defects on In2O3-x accelerate the redox reaction kinetics of polysulfides.•The composite structure suppresses the shuttle effect and the corrosion of Li metal.
