What does nature feel like? Using embodied walking interviews to discover cultural ecosystem services

•Cultural ecosystem services (CES) continue to be challenging to uncover, define, and evaluate.•We suggest a new method for evaluating CES, using embodied walking interviews.•We performed 120 walking interviews in Israel, Finland, the Netherlands, and the UK.•Case-specific CES focused on biotic elements of the landscape and sensory sensations.•CES across contexts included calmness, memories, imagination, learning, energy, perspective, and quiet.
