Real Time Density–Based Traffic Congestion Detection System Using Image Processing and Fuzzy Logic Controller

Today, traffic congestion is a daily occurrence in most urban areas. The tremendous change in quantity of automobiles and the finite resources supplied by the present infrastructure play a major role in traffic congestion. Some traditional methods exist to detect congestion, but they are tedious and time consuming. But, it is very important to disseminate the real-time traffic scenario to drivers moving towards a congested area to avoid severe congestion. This chapter proposes an approach to detect the level of congestion using a fuzzy logic controller by taking number of vehicles as an important parameter counted by an image processing technique in place of physical sensors. This system is designed to inform the drivers about the traffic conditions as they approach the congested area to avoid waste of time and fuel.
