摘要

•We identify MBD genes in Fabidae group for the first time.•One ancient phylogenetic cluster was found among MBDs from plants, algae, and humans.•In plants, MBD9 class may have emerged after the hexaploidization of eudicots.•MBDs domains have mCpG-binding amino acids residues conserved in plants and humans.•Plant MBDs with substitutions on these residues could bind to heterochromatin.
