•A new reference material of quartz is certified for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na and Ti.•Within and between bottles homogeneity is carried out by a validated method.•Competent laboratories were selected by PT exercise for the ILCE.•ICP-AES, FAAS, and TXRF were used for the characterization.•Certified valued are traceable to SI units; MUs are evaluated using ISO guides (34–35).
