•COVID-19 is characterized by marked sex and gender differences.•The role of sex hormones in SARS-CoV-2 infection is largely unknown.•Female sex and younger age were negatively associated with the severity of the disease in this study.•Older females seem to benefit from hormonal therapy against the SARS-CoV-2 infection.
