Exceptionally high spallation strength for a high-entropy alloy demonstrated by experiments and simulations

•We present experiments and simulations of shock waves and spall in the Cantor alloy.•We find an exceptionally high spall strength comparable with strong bcc materials.•The difference between experiments and simulations is an effect of the strain rate.•Experimental samples show nanotwins near the spall plane.
