•The benefits of using the robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) device in combination with standard physiotherapy can assist ambulatory function in subacute hemiplegic stroke.•RAGT device can facilitate activities of daily living for subacute hemiplegic stroke.•RAGT device can improve patients’ walking endurance and capacity in 6-minute walk test for subacute hemiplegic stroke.
