•Cohorting of patients at admission increases the risk of hospital-acquired COVID-19.•Point-of-care testing (POCT) reduced time to results compared with laboratory PCR.•POCT reduced the time that patients spent in cohort areas.•POCT was associated with a reduction in the risk of hospital-acquired COVID-19.
