Reflective writing in the teaching of communication skills for medical students—A systematic review

•A systematic review on use of reflective writing (RW) in teaching communication skills to medical students.•RW was integrated with other teaching methods, intended to encourage group discussions and experiential learning.•Through RW, medical students reflected on structural, emotional and relational aspects and challenges of communication.•RW was used to help forge a link between theoretical learning and practice.•Further educational development and research on the use of RW is needed to support communication skill learning.
