•Residents showed significant increases in their USIJCVC knowledge pre-to post-online training.•There were no differences in USIJCVC checklist performance between in-person and online cohorts.•There were no differences in the number of USIJCVC insertions between in-person and online cohorts.•The online cohort had a significantly better economy of time and motion compared to in-person.
