Association between increased nonaerated lung weight and treatment failure in patients with de novo acute respiratory failure: Difference between high-flow nasal oxygen therapy and noninvasive ventilation in a multicentre retrospective study

•Use of HFNC or NIV in patients with de novo respiratory failure is still challenging.•In the quantitative CT analysis, nonaerated lung weight was calculated in these patients.•Greater nonaerated lung weight was associated with HFNC failure.•No association between nonaerated lung weight and NIV failure was observed.
