Stronger effects of termites than microbes on wood decomposition in a subtropical forest

•Wood exposed to termites decomposed significantly faster than that excluded.•Termites can exceed microbes in importance to wood decomposition.•The role of termites and microbes to wood decompose depended on soil contact types.•Wood in direct contact with the soil decomposed 1.4 times as fast as wood separated.
