•TiO2 nanoparticles as an additive improves drilling fluid characteristics.•Zeta potential of TiO2 nanoparticles in xanthan gum shows a stable dispersion.•Thermal stability of mud properties is improved due to nanoparticles addition.•HPHT and LPLT fluid loss reduced significantly due to TiO2.•TiO2 with conventional additives improves high temperature performance of mud.
