•Propofol hyperpolarized PVT neurons and decreased action potentials induced by depolarizing step-current injections in the PVT neurons.•Propofol prolonged sIPSCs and mIPSCs, and increased the mIPSCs frequency in the PVT neurons.•Propofol induced tonic inhibitory currents via GABAA receptors.
