Simultaneous oxidation of toluene and ethyl acetate in a packed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was investigated. Catalysts Fe/13X, Mn/13X and Mo/13X were used for degrading toluene or ethyl acetate. Fe/13X demonstrated a high mineralization rate of toluene, while Mn/13X had good oxidation performance on ethyl acetate. Mechanical mixed Mn/13X and Fe/13X catalysts (Fe/13X-Mn/13X) exhibited better oxidation performance than Fe-Mn bimetallic catalysts for simultaneous degradation of toluene and ethyl acetate. The breakthrough time for simultaneous adsorption of toluene and ethyl acetate was greatly reduced compared to that for single volatile organic compound (VOC) toluene or ethyl acetate adsorption, and ethyl acetate could replace the adsorbed toluene due to competitive adsorption. The mechanism of simultaneous oxidation of toluene and ethyl acetate was analyzed based on the detected intermediates.
