•HCO3− significantly promotes SOT photodegradation under simulated sunlight.•Addition of HCO3− has negligible effects on the degradation of CAR and ARO.•Seawater DOM enhances HCO3−-induced photodegradation of SOT.•Freshwater DOM decreases HCO3−-induced photodegradation rate of SOT.•CO3•− contributes to the enhancement of SOT degradation in HCO3− solutions.
