Olfactory encoding within the insect antennal lobe: The emergence and role of higher order temporal correlations in the dynamics of antennal lobe spiking activity

•The antennal lobe (AL) has largely been viewed from a rate coding perspective.•The possible dynamical role of higher order correlations has been largely ignored.•We review our network modeling work in the fly, moth, and locust.•We make the case that correlations over short time scales may be important in the AL.•We use our network models to propose dynamical roles for such temporal correlations.
