Multiple Access Schemes for Machine-Type Communications: A Literature Review

This chapter presents a review of the existing multiple access schemes proposed for MTC, and relevant to the works presented in this book. Section 2.1 discusses and categorizes multiple access schemes proposed for MTC in wireless communication networks including LTE and WiFi-based networks. Section 2.2 presents some studies on MTC in the LTE and WiFi coexistence scenarios. Sections 2.3 and 2.4, discuss multiple access schemes proposed to provide massive connectivity for MTC by using NOMA and massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology, respectively. Finally, Sect. 2.5 reviews the fast uplink grant schemes which are promising to enhance the performance of MTC systems both in terms of throughput and access delay.
