•S-scheme Bi-BiOCl/MgIn2S4 marigold microflower heterostructure.•6 % Bi-BiOCl/MgIn2S4 sample behaved the optimal photocatalytic performance for CO2 photoreduction into CH4.•Metal Bi acted as the bridge connecting the BiOCl and MgIn2S4 to facilitate the charge transfer.
