•Leptin and leptin receptor were detected in granulosa and theca cells of follicles.•LEPROT, ADIPOR1 and ADIPOR2 mRNA was lower in subordinate follicles.•Intrafollicular injection of leptin did not affect dominant follicle growth.•Leptin did not regulate steroidogenic and apoptotic genes mRNA in granulosa cells.
