•A new strategy for benchmarking building electricity usage was presented.•Multivariate adaptive regression splines model was used to enhance interpretability.•Clustering technique was used to improve the accuracy of the benchmarking result.•Conditional inference trees technique was used to evaluate the benchmarking result.•The strategy was tested using 20 university buildings and showed good performance.
