Glacier and snow hydrology investigation in the Upper Indus Basin using Synthetic Aperture Radar

The flows of the Indus River are a vital resource for food security, ecosystem services, hydropower and economy for China, India and Pakistan. Glaciers of the Karakoram Mountains are the largest drivers of discharge in the Upper Indus Basin, and combined with snowmelt constitute the majority of runoff. While recently verified in near balance, the glaciers of the Karakoram exhibit substantial variation both spatially and temporally. Complex climatology, coupled with the challenges of field study in this rugged range, illicit notable uncertainties in observation and prediction of glacial status. Satellite-borne radar sensors acquire imagery regardless of cloud cover or time of day, and offer unique insights into physical processes due to their wavelength.
