Integrating GitLab Metrics into Coursework Consultation Sessions in a Software Engineering Course

•Activity metrics from software development tools can be used to monitor student progress.•Students find checkpoint sessions where these metrics are shared with the team useful.•The metrics highlight uneven distribution of workload.•It would be useful to include further detail about the work completed/code written.•Presentation of the metrics in checkpoint sessions was associated with a higher student pass rate.
