Using SHRP2 naturalistic driving data to examine driver speeding behavior

•Over 99% of drivers have at least one occurrence of speeding 10 mph above the PSL.•Around 10% of all drivers averaged zero higher-speed SEs per trip.•Around 37% of all drivers averaged less than 1 SE per 10 trips.•Only 9% of all drivers averaged more than one SE per trip.•Average maximum speeds ranged between 12 mph to 15 mph above the PSL.•Younger driver group showed the highest ratio of speeding episodes to trips.
