•A new carbonate O-S section in South China constrained by δ13C data and cyclostratigraphy.•Integrated δ13C, δ238U, elemental data and a mass balance model collectively constrain the LOME.•Two episodes of anoxia were separated by an oxygenated snapshot in the latest Ordovician.•Marine anoxia together with climate changes played a critical role in faunal turnover.
