•Small quantity of oxygenated compounds in jet fuel is responsible for poor thermal stability.•Quantification of trace oxygenated species is conducted by solid phase extraction (SPE)•Fuel matrix influences Rhodamine B (Rh-B) UV fluorescence quenching.•A new method based on SPE and Rh-B UV fluorescence quenching is developed to identify oxygenate compounds in jet fuels.•The method developed allows the fast detection of trace oxygenated molecules in jet fuel at operational field conditions.
