•FeS nanoparticles were effectively decorated onto the surface of GO.•The aggregation of nanoscale FeS decreased with enhanced reactivity.•The nanocomposites GO/FeS displayed an enhanced Cr(VI) sorption capacity.•Both surface sorption and reduction contributed to Cr(VI) removal by GO/FeS.
