•Chlorella sp. UKM2 presented the highest CO2 uptake rate of 567 mg L−1 day-1.•All microalgae species demonstrated high CO2 uptake rates and 100 % removal of NH4+-N.•Both Chlorella species exhibited more average nutrient removal rate (ANRR).
