•gcil6 and gcil10 mRNA are induced by bacteria in grass carp head kidney leucocytes.•Recombinant gcIl-6 enhances gcil10 mRNA levels after a short term treatment.•Stat3 is involved in the stimulation on gcil10 mRNA expression by gcIl-6.•gcil10 mRNA levels are decreased by gcIl-6 after a long term treatment.•gcIl-6 activates gcil10 promoter but has no effect on gcil10 mRNA stability.
