摘要
•Organisational factors were all found to have a strong positive impact on discretionary effort.•Individual factors such as personal work values and the need for comradery and closeness with managers and colleagues, increased employee discretionary effort.•Participants who had a clear professional identity, also engaged in higher levels of discretionary effort than those that viewed their jobs as casual employment.•A combination of both organisational and individual factors have been shown to create an internal culture that develops and empowers employees to collaborate and this appears to provide the best basis for increasing discretionary effort.
