•Behavior of non-contact splices in bridge column-drilled shaft connections is experimentally investigated.•Effect of non-contact distance on the structural stiffness and cracking mechanism is investigated.•Effect of splice length and transverse reinforcement in the non-contact splice zone is investigated.•The current AASHTO LRFD code provisions are evaluated.•Recommendations for the design of non-contact lap splices is provided.
