Siw-Backed Array With Compensated Mutual Coupling For Wide-Angle Scanning

An ultralow-profile (about 0.017 lambda(0)) phased array based on substrate integrated waveguides (SIWs) is proposed for wide-angle scanning. The bandwidth is improved by etching unequal slots on the SIW of the array element. To mitigate impedance mismatch of the active element during the scanning process, an effective mutual coupling compensation network is connected to the feeding lines of the array. With the improved bandwidth and compensated mutual coupling, the phased array scans from -65 degrees to +65 degrees in the azimuth plane from 9.8 GHz to 10.2 GHz with realized gain fluctuating less than 2.5 dB.
