Urbanization alters belowground invertebrate community structure in semi-arid regions: A comparison of lawns, biofilters and sage scrub

•Soil faunal communities differed among urban habitat types in a semi-arid region.•Urbanization may cause dominance by desiccation-intolerant litter transformer taxa.•Density was highest in lawns; Diversity and evenness were highest in native habitat.•Biofilters were intermediate in most community metrics and environmental factors.•Communities were related to soil moisture, organic matter, plant richness and cover.
