•Predict directly the natural frequencies of monolayer h-BN nanosheet from atomic interaction.•Determine the thickness of monolayer h-BN nanosheet by fitting continuum mechanics with atomistic-continuum approach.•Determine the Young's modulus and flexural rigidity of h-BN nanosheet.•Study edge effect on the free vibration behaviors of h-BN nanosheets by AFEM.
