•The peak emission of NO VER and Dst index are negatively correlated during the geomagnetic storm.•The atomic oxygen number density ([O]) is positively correlated with the observed Dst index.•The peak emission of NO VER and [O] are correlated positively near equator and negatively at high latitudes.
