Trapped mercury ion frequency standards are pumped with discharge lamps, offering a unique approach with simplicity and robustness. This paper describes the development of a miniature mercury ion trap package intended for a low-power atomic clock based on the 40.5-GHz ground state hyperfine transition of trapped 199 Hg .
