•Authors consider the construct of experience and engagement as distinct constructs.•A conceptual model was developed to predict consumer videogame engagement.•Data were collected from 436 teenage students who were videogame users.•The study used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).•Playful-consumption experiences are true predictors of consumer videogame engagement states.
