•Changes in indole-3-acetic acid’s (IAA) and its precursors’ level in growing tomatoes studied.•Variations in the expressions of the IAA metabolism genes also studied.•Indole-3-pyruvic acid pathway controls de novo IAA biosynthesis in pollinated ovaries.•Auxin inactivating-enzymes are possibly involved in control of IAA levels in unpollinated ovaries.•2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid boosts auxin biosynthetic-enzyme gene expression in unpollinated ovaries.
